Transparency is At the Heart of what we do.

We understand that our cafe exists within multiple ecosystems. These ecosystems, like a venn diagram, have moments where they are unique upon themselves, but also overlap into other aspects that we feel are a part about our company ethos. Being transparent about our operations we feel isn’t just good business, it’s a operating imperative. Cafe’s exist in this realm of international trade, environmentalism, farming practices, ingredient curation, food science, technical talent, a connection to culture and aesthetics, hospitality, and most importantly, the brass tacks and practical implications of operating a business. Breaking the fourth wall and speaking as the owner, the weaving of these ideas is the reason that I love coffee so passionately. It speaks to me in a way that makes me so resolute that something as small as a coffee shop can have a deep and profound meaning in one persons life. I love what being a ‘third space’ means for a community.

Transparency is how we put our money where our mouth is. We’re transparent with the farms we use, and how much we the coffee we’re purchasing costs. We pay above market value for green coffee and purchase from the top producing farms around the world. Being open about those costs helps foster a dialogue for greater transparency in the market. This will help farmers in coffee growing countries have better negotiation power. Being transparent about the farms we work with, also allows us to hold farms to account for ethical labor practices for the labor they need. Transparency about our process is important to us. Both as a knowledge base, and as a way to join in trends and help the collective of our community. The service economy is often filled with a misnomer that we are ‘low skilled labor’ and that couldn’t be more false. So we will always pay above our local minimum wage and we’ll be transparent of how much executive pay is balanced in with our labor costs as well. Being transparent about our financial breakdowns allows you as customers see how we use your dollar. In an era of growing distrust between person and institution, transparency gives a vehicle for greater understanding.
